To prepare new users of a recently FDA-approved breast screening device for system operation and image interpretation, I worked alongside the National Principal Investigator and clinical research team to develop a comprehensive training curriculum. The curriculum was FDA-approved and new users were required to pass at 100% to be certified in order to operate the system and perform image review.
The training curriculum included online training modules completed before the in-person training session to ensure system operators or radiologists understood the basic concepts of the system and images that are reinforced during in-person training. Following the in-person training, trainees are provided a certificate of completion and access to supplemental training materials including training guides and additional educational case library.
New SoftVue users were required to pass the FDA-approved online training platform to advance to in-person training. On the password-protected platform, Radiologists were presented with 10 modules and a final assessment, and operators were presented with two modules and a final assessment. During in-person training, radiologists were presented with 50 SoftVue cases and the corresponding mammogram. Using both sets of exams, the radiologist instructor guided the trainees through the first 10 cases, highlighting different masses and their associated characteristics on SoftVue. The remainder were reviewed prospectively with trainees looking for cancers or benign masses using both SoftVue images and corresponding mammograms. Two assessments were conducted during the in-person training session to ensure trainee proficiency in SoftVue image interpretation. Upon completing the training platform, the radiologist trainees received a certificate authorizing them to conduct SoftVue Image Interpretation.
During operator in-person training, the instructor first reviewed the SoftVue system maintenance and operation manual with the trainees. Once the trainees understood how to run and execute test scans, each trainee scanned eight volunteers and completed a final assessment. Upon completion of the online and in-person training, trainees were provided with a certificate designating them as SoftVue Operators.
To ensure confidence and continued proficiency with SoftVue image review, a printed training guide is provided to radiologists reinforcing lesion characteristics and clinical classification for suspicious masses. In addition, unique cases with teaching points are provided through a Case Atlas included in the online training platform.
