As a cause-based communications professional, I am naturally attracted to volunteer opportunities within my community. Giving back is my soul's purpose and drives my choices when evaluating future career opportunities.
The Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure is an annual event that started in the 1990s. It focuses on funding for breast cancer research and providing support services to individuals going through their cancer journey. This is a cause that is near to my heart and since 2005, I led the sponsorship and team participation for each organization I was employed, including the Michigan Association of CPAs, Karmanos Cancer Institute, and Delphinus Medical Technologies. In 2021, I was invited by the Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race to Chair the Planning Committee based on my dedication to the organization's mission. As Chair of the Planning Committee, I oversaw volunteer recruitment and event marketing for two years and saw increased participation by 1000 individuals each year. As Chair, I was also responsible for event execution, including all logistics for the Race, participant registration, and post-event debrief with the committee.
For three years, I volunteered with Winning Futures, a non-profit based in Metro Detroit. The organization is dedicated to empowering high school students to achieve success in their lives post-high school graduation through mentoring programs. Each year, I worked with a group of students, providing guidance on career exploration with an emphasis on continuing education and planning for life after high school. During my time with Winning Futures, I was awarded Mentor of the Year and received the Spirit of Detroit Award for my dedication to improving students' lives in Metro Detroit.
While working at Karmanos Cancer Institute, I was introduced to two different organizations through relationships I formed with physicians. I was invited to participate in the Communications Sub-committee of The Michigan Cancer Consortium to assist with redesigning the organization's website and provide guidance on improving member communications. In addition, I worked closely with academic physicians in the immunotherapy research program. I was invited to serve as the web manager for the Translational Research Cancer Centers Consortium, a non-profit organization bringing together like-minded researchers focused on improving cancer treatments and patient care through immunotherapy. I also assisted with planning and executing of the TRCCC annual meeting each year.
The Royal Oak Women's Club was established in 1902 and is dedicated to improving the lives of Royal Oak residents through fundraising volunteering. The Club boasts a membership of 70 empowered women who work with community organizations to support local non-housed individuals, students, first responders, and various other non-profits. As a member of the Royal Oak Women's Club, I have gained strong friendships, improved my leadership and relationship-building skills, and developed a greater connection with individuals in my community and a better understanding of the struggles they face daily.
